I absolutely agree. My experience with HAL has been somewhat tepid... It
is much more resource-hungry than HomeSeer and It is less flexible in terms
of expanding its functionalities via user development. The PC it ran on
became unstable and, could not be used for much of anything else...
However, Perhaps HAL has a bit more built-in stuff out of the box but, if
you intend to develop yourself, to me anyway, it's a No-Brainer... HomeSeer
is the way to go!

I personally find HAI +HomeSeer to be a good combination of a high
reliability dedicated automation/security/HVAC controller (HAI) and an
extremely flexible expandable PC automation platform (HomeSeer). They're
pretty well integrated also, to the point that I use HomeSeer's web
interface to HAI (via it's HAI plugin) more than I use HAI's weblink.
