Hi Andrew.  Have you tested this modem with something else to make sure 
it is not a problem with the modem itself?  i.e.: call into an ISP for 
example and make sure that works.

Here are two other suggestions:
 	- if it is a desktop, slot the modem in a different slot
 	- if it is a laptop, make sure that the power plug is connected, 
and that you set the power meter settings to 'always on'.  I have seen 
problems with both modems and serial ports on laptops running in power 
save modes.  Note that the ALways ON will also work with the battery, but 
since all the energy saving features are shut off, it will just eat the 
battery faster.
